Advising at Carlbrook School
Carlbrook School’s Advisor Program is key to the entire educational experience. Students attending Carlbrook seek academic reparation, personal redirection and guidance. Without an effective and substantive advisor program, it would be difficult to foster a climate conducive to academic and personal achievement. Serving as mentors and advocates, Advisors help students realize their potential by promoting genuine fellowship with the students in their charge. Advisors spend their time helping students make the most of themselves and their time at Carlbrook. Emphasis is placed on prioritization, time management, interpersonal skills, goal setting, formulation of reasonable expectations for oneself, and healthy family interaction.
Essential to all of advising curricula is the concept of communication, both between students and advisors and the students themselves. Relationships and hard work forge the confidence and self-assurance that is so critical to the development of a young mind, particularly one that is skeptical of the status quo. As such, all students are expected to actively participate in regular group meetings and conferences, which represent an important component of the personal development curriculum and offer students the opportunity to carefully examine key aspects of relationships and personal commitment.
It should be emphasized that because the school believes rapport to be the essence of an effective student advisor program, the school is committed to an atmosphere that is respectful and devoid of sarcasm and caustic personality. Carlbrook is founded on the conviction that all students are worthy of respect, must be treated with dignity, and are deserving of patience and explanation at all times. The Advisor Program reflects these values.
Finally, it should be noted that the school’s Academic and Advisor Programs are highly interrelated, reinforcing each other and identifying those issues that have hindered a student’s academic and personal achievement. This dual focus promotes intellectual growth and academicachievement by instilling students with the necessary work ethic and organizational skills, while simultaneously emphasizing the need for students to take responsibility for their own actions.
